# The opening: you are lucky to be here

> The first pages of the second edition as Dinis described them, in 16 panels: wonder, not fear; the history; technology that finally works for you; learning made for you; and why that makes you a developer.

Status: draft · By: gen-z.journalist, 18 October 2026, from Dinis's memo on the core idea · 16 panels

*Drawn at <https://storyboards.sgit.ai/gen-z-developers/the-opening/>; the data is [storyboard.json](storyboard.json), the cast [cast.json](../cast.json).*

*Every line the Guide says, and every quote card, is Dinis's words from the article 'You are lucky to be here', word for word; the build checks it. The other characters' lines are the storyboard's.*

## 1. You are lucky to be here

*cover*

The opening of the second edition, in 16 panels: wonder, not fear.

- **Zara** (arms-up, happy)
- **Tomás** (wave, happy)
- **Priya** (stand, happy)
- **The Agent** (wave, happy)
- **The Guide** (wave, happy)

The book's first mood: wonder. Sam is left off the cover on purpose; the hiring question comes later.

## 2. 2017: the slide that started the first edition

*scene, setting: classroom*

- **The Guide** (point, happy) says: “how many logos do you recognize?”
- **Zara** (shrug, worried) says: “Hardly any.”
- **Tomás** (think, thinking)

The 2018 book opens with this question, from a presentation to young people in 2017.

## 3. Looking back

*punchline*

> **it went too technical, too deep, too soon**

- **The Guide** (shrug, thinking)

Dinis's own verdict on the first edition's middle: Parts 2 and 3, nineteen chapters of technologies.

## 4. The doom

*scene, setting: night*

- **Zara** (think, worried) thinks: “Everyone says AI will take my job.”
- **The Guide** (stand, determined) says: “nobody knows what is going to happen”

Props: phone

The book does not start from the fear; it answers it on the first page and moves on.

## 5. The first message of the book

*punchline*

> **ridiculously privileged to be living at this moment in time**

- **Zara** (arms-up, surprised)
- **Priya** (stand, happy)

The core idea: whoever reads this in 2026 or 2027 is lucky to be here.

## 6. The transformations I have lived through

*spectrum*

- **The Guide** (point, happy)
- **Zara** (think, thinking)

Spectrum (early 1980s) → BBS (1980s) → Internet (1990s) → Mobile (late 1990s) → Cloud (mid 2000s) → Apps (2008) → AI (2022)

Each one changed whole industries. The dates are the commonly recorded ones and need sources in the chapter.

## 7. The only difference

*scene*

- **The Guide** (point, happy) says: “this one is televised”

Props: board (the money / the players / the whole stack, / all at once)

Why this transformation feels bigger: it is more visible.

## 8. We have been here before

*evidence*

- **The Guide** (point, determined)

> “The Nasdaq peaked in March 2000 and had lost almost four fifths of its value by October 2002, and the internet still changed everything.”
>
> Source: You are lucky to be here; the index values to be cited in the chapter

A crash would change who makes money, not what people can do.

## 9. Wonder

*scene*

- **Zara** (arms-up, surprised) says: “Wait. I can build that?”
- **The Agent** (wave, happy) says: “Want to try it now?”

Props: laptop, desk

The feeling of discovering what you can do: workflows, ideas, executed.

*Source: You are lucky to be here, Wonder*

## 10. Not only for the creative ones

*evidence*

- **Priya** (point, happy)

> “you can now scale the things you are not good at”
>
> Source: You are lucky to be here, Wonder

Priya on this card: it applies to anybody.

## 11. Technology that worked on you

*scene, setting: night*

- **Zara** (think, worried)
- **The Guide** (point, worried) says: “Gen Z in particular was given a technology stack designed to hook them”

Props: phone

Attention, advertising, dopamine. The 2018 draft Dopamine already called it the new smoking.

*Source: You are lucky to be here, Technology that did not work for you*

## 12. My generation could build things

*scene*

- **The Guide** (point, happy) says: “Now they can build again.”
- **Zara** (arms-up, happy)

Props: laptop, desk

From users of technology to builders of it.

*Source: You are lucky to be here, Technology that did not work for you*

## 13. Learning, made for you

*scene, setting: classroom*

- **Priya** (shrug, worried) says: “I was never good at school.”
- **The Guide** (point, happy) says: “The academic model was generic, made for a mythical student”

The fish and the tree; personalised learning paths; going deep where your gaps are.

*Source: You are lucky to be here, Learning, made for you*

## 14. Become a developer

*scene*

- **Zara** (point, thinking) says: “So I make my own tools?”
- **The Guide** (stand, happy) says: “craftspeople made their own tools”

Props: laptop, desk

The reason the title says developer: craft, and customisation.

*Source: You are lucky to be here, Become a developer*

## 15. It is still your name

*scene*

- **The Agent** (wave, happy) says: “Shall I just decide for you?”
- **The Guide** (stand, determined) says: “it is you thinking with generative AI”

Responsibility stays with you; and sometimes you use generative AI so that you do not have to use it.

*Source: You are lucky to be here, Think with it*

## 16. The jobs that never scaled, and where on the map you land

*spectrum*

- **Zara** (wave, happy) says: “Where do I land?”
- **Priya** (point, determined)
- **Tomás** (stand, thinking)

Explorer (builds the new) → Villager (makes it work for people) → Town planner (makes it reliable, and answers for it)

Old jobs, finally with good technology; and each reader finds where their personality is drawn.
